Combination of both. 55 and my eyes are fading so I use a 10x lupe but I find scanning and using mostly Photoshop better, especially on the back of the stamp. By playing with contrast and brightness, thins, inclusions, hinge remnants, gum disturbances and watermarks are much more clearly visible. Also check perfs and centering. I do this with any stamps I am looking to buy on ebay or at auction. I also use a PDF program, Bluebeam, that I used in construction. I'll check out Linux.

Nothingman[...Yes check out Linux software , Linux people have a version for Windows and Mac..If you can't afford Photoshop's high price, may I suggest GIMP..It will do 99% of what Photoshop can do and do some things better. They always ask for donations, but it is up to the individual....Link below...

Thanks Robert, looks great. Is the perf gauge layer an actual scan calibrated to the stamp size? I have tried this by using a scan of a stamp with confirmed perf size to calibrate the perf gauge layer.
I'm just getting back into the hobby and am stumbling along using what I have.
Thanks again for the sources and knowledge.
Steve
