Here's a happy recent pickup - the Great Lakes Exposition, held in Cleveland during 1936 and 1937, didn't have a post office, but that didn't stop someone from trying to send a letter to an exposition visitor. This is only the second example known of the "Great Lakes Expo." handstamp. There are plenty of souvenir cachets from the exposition (it even had an official director of cachets, Mark Emsley.

The recipient, Henry O. Meisel, was a cover collector (well known as a cachet maker and a collector of meters), and also known for his long motorcycle tours of the U.S. But this isn't really quite "philatelic" - the letter (still present) is from Meisel's mother. I'll write this up for a future issue of the Ohio Postal HIstory Journal.

Interesting cover. I haven't heard much about this exposition, especially on a philatelic note.

A nice collection of postcards from the Great Lakes Exposition may be found here:

It's also interesting to note that ebay has several listings for special cachets, poster stamps, meter advertising and even this one: For "Philatelic Day" at the Expo (sponsored by the Garfield-Perry Stamp Club), which also happens to double as an "unofficial" first day cover for the stamp shown:

Cheesecake to solicit new collectors? Is that what we need to help the hobby survive?

A few years ago a friend was spending a couple of weeks in a remote cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and routinely received mail at a small post office via General Delivery. A check I mailed him was instantly "returned for better address".
