I was looking at some postal history items on ebay and came upon this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Auxiliary-c...em5b04ee2a5b

Is this a legitimate postal marking from Boston (circa 1878)? I've never seen a triangular marking like this before and wonder what the initials "B.D." on it may mean?

Yes, this is a legit Boston Carrier marking. If memory serves, the 'BD' stands for 'Boston (City) Delivery.'

Thanks. I learned something new. It is interesting that the same linked ebay cover has a backstamp that also refers to "Boston Carrier" but in a traditional round shape:
