Comparison Of Three Newfoundland Stamps On Covers

There was another post on one of these covers, but I thought it would be fun to share a side by comparison of this great Newfoundland issue of the "blue seal".

Not to be confused with the blue seal stamp from 1868-1879, these three stamps were engraved with perf 12 x 12 at three different times, with slightly varying colors. These are hard to find just so, with certification--but on cover, one can be almost sure by sleuthing the dates. I might be incorrect but I believe these are one of each.

Here are the following:

Scott #53 "Pale Blue" (NSSC #50), issued first in 1880. (My exemplar was canceled in 1884)

Scott #54 "Dark Blue" (NSSC #50a), issued 1887. (My exemplar was canceled 1889)

Scott $55 "Bright Blue" (NSSC 50b), issued 1894. (My exemplar was canceled in 1894)

And to the eye, the colors appear different, though hardly scientific with 120 years of aging..

Nice covers tommy...I took a colour sample from the area just to the right of "Newfoundland" on each cover..See the difference.

Might I suggest you do one scan of the three stamps together, side by side so we can really make a comparison? When I scroll from one to the other, they look quite similar.
