Here's an old timer I recently came across while researching ebay listings and was wondering if anyone knows of the history of this organization and/or when it disbanded (I assume it disbanded, as it is not around today by that name) ... seems like it was an amalgamation of several smaller stamp clubs primarily in the New England and New York/New Jersey metro areas:

The above cover doesn't go with the letter below, but the letter gives a little more information about the membership of the organization:

One further item I found is this reference for incorporating the Society as late as 1938 in Somerville, Massachusetts:

wt1 - the only thing I can find is in this list of Cinderella/Poster stamp issues in this link:

http://www.cinderellas.info/philexpo/phils-z.htm

If you do a find on the group's name you will see a list of issues.

Apparently the United Stamp Societies was still around in the mid-18930s. Lindquist's Philatelic Almanac of 1936 contains this brief mention:

History
New England has long been known as one of the most active philatelic areas in the United States. Throughout the region there are literally dozens of stamp clubs and societies. Many of these groups sponsor their own shows, which range from small one day exhibitions and bourses to the former three day Boston Show (co-sponsored by the Boston Philatelic Society and the ASDA).

In the autumn of 1977, James T. De Voss, Executive Secretary of the American Philatelic Society, met informally with a number of area stamp collectors to present the idea of forming a federation of stamp clubs in the northeastern part of the country. A steering committee consisting of six members from various stamp clubs was formed. This steering committee met several times during that year, and delegates from throughout New England attended the two organizational meetings.

The second of these organizational meetings was held at the Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum (now the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History) in Weston, Massachusetts. At that meeting, 33 delegates adopted a set of bylaws and, most importantly, a name: The Northeastern Federation of Stamp Clubs.

Immediately after the "birth" of the Federation, the following slate of officers was elected: Arthur B. Lohan, president; Thomas G. Barrett, vice president; Mrs. Katherine M. MacIsaac, secretary; and Hugh J. McMackin, treasurer. Also elected was aboard of directors that included, in addition to the officers, Gilbert P. Bemis, Fotios Drakos, Lester Goverman, Herbert Keough, George Norton, and Tony Paonessa.

The first meeting of the Federation was held at Boston Show 78, and a number of suggestions for activities were discussed. In the fall of 1978 the Federation accepted the role of host group for the 1979 American Philatelic Society Stampshow and Mrs. Katherine M. MacIsaac accepted the position of general chairman of the convention/exhibition.

It appears to be a different group.

Why Yes That is the same Orginazation. Heard back from the current president Sue Hardy, and she says;
"I'm not sure how to post a comment at that site, so I'll respond here. We are the organization founded in 1919. I first joined the United Stamp Societies about 50 years ago but took a break while raising a family. We have 29 active clubs and circulate our member made circuit books through them. When I first joined, the General Sales Manager was Dan Bramin, a WW I veteran. Over the years, as the job became bigger, we split it into a General Finance Manager and a General Circuit Manager. We only meet at most once a year as our members range from Massachusetts to South Carolina and west to New Mexico. We will be meeting this year at the Boxboro, MA show on May 3 and I expect only about a dozen in attendance.

My own club, the Manchester (CT) Philatelic Society, meets twice monthly with between 20 and 30 at each meeting. I show two circuits of between 20 and 25 books each at each meeting. We are also a chapter club of the APS (as is The United Stamp Sociey) and a member of the Northeast Federation.

Sue Hardy, President USS"

Interesting. So the organization still exists 96 years later. (It wasn't easy to find the connection though.)

Fascinating. littleriverphil -- I wonder why that wasn't mention on the their HISTORY page; that's where I took the quote from? They may want to edit that. How many org's can say they've been around 96 years!
