Wang Zhaojun (c. 50 BC - ?) was known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. However, Wang Zhaojun's great beauty, high intelligence, and many accomplishments were unknown to the Han emperor, Yuan, because of the dishonesty of the court portrait painter. To cement a political alliance, Emperor Yuan ordered Wang Zhaojun to marry Huhanye Chanyu, leader of the nomadic Xiongnu people, with whom she subsequently became a favorite and bore him three children. Hundreds of poems, songs, stories and folktales about Wang Zhaojun exist. Here are images of the two stamps in a set illustrating the story of Wang Zhaojun, printed by photogravure, and issued by China (People's Republic) on August 25, 1994, Scott Nos. 2509 & 2510. Bonuses: Musical instrument and camels. - nethryk PS This story did not end well for the corrupt court painter. nethryk, that is really a beautiful stamp of an ancient painting of Wang Zhaajun -I know her as Wang Qiang. She is often referred to as one of China's "four great beauties", who were supposedly the four most beautiful women in all Chinese history. I don't know about the painter but her story was surely not a happy one. Although Zhaojun was a concubine in the seraglio of Han emperor Yuan (Han Yuandi), he had never noticed her. One reason was that she refused to bribe a painter, Mao Yanshou, and so his painting of her did not do her justice. As a result when a Central Asian nomad prince named Huhanye came looking for a bride, the emperor volunteered her (by another account she was so desperate that she volunteered herself). She then had to spend the rest of her life in the barren lands of Central Asia. When her husband died she was married to her stepson, as custom dictated. She requested permission from the Han Emperor Cheng to return home, but he refused. Some accounts say that she then committed suicide. I had a beautiful hand painted scroll of this very painting which was amongst everything I lost in Katrina. Thanks for posting the stamp. |

Is she beautiful? Well, these attentive dandies evidently think so! The Incroyables ("incredibles") and their female counterparts, the Merveilleuses ("marvelous women", roughly equivalent to "fabulous divas"), were members of a fashionable aristocratic subculture in Paris during the French Directory (1795-1799). Here is an image of a stamp depicting three members of this exclusive social set, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris after original artwork by French painter Carle Vernet (1758-1836), and issued by France on October 7, 1972, Scott No. 1351, Y&T No. 1729. - nethryk |

Although I'm not up on many issues since 1988, these 2 certainly qualify on my list. Neither the stamp or the image to the right does her justice. And Audrey Hepburn IMO radiated a sort of "inner beauty" as well. US Scott No. 3786 And also...US Scott No. 2749 -IBFS |
