Phil, specializing is OK and I did that at one time with a pair of Minkus British America and British Oceania Albums that I still occasionally add to. But as a general collector, I'm never held hostage to having to get a particular stamp to fill a particular hole in my collection. There's enough out there that I never have to go out looking for $50, $100, or $1000 items. There is plenty of room for fairly inexpensive enjoyment.
Larry, I said much the same thing to a friend of mine who specializes in German states...you and I are on the same wave length..collecting world wide the way I do it..gives me an awful lot of leeway..don't think that all the pages in my 8 scott internationals have stamps on them....the early scott albums were really works of art with the prints of the old stamps in them...my albums are probably products of the 1950s to about 1970..it is frustrating when I have a stamp that falls between where one album leaves off..say 1963 and the other picks up in late 1964 !!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the way you both do Larry and Phil. My goal is to collect as many different stamps as I can.
Being a new collector it's a little overwelming right now, however when I look at the big picture I realize that I have many years ahead of me of looking for deals to fill all the holes I have.
Diane a dealer friend of David Giles said "it all comes around in time" and it is true....sooner or later things you never saw will come on the market..and be affordable.i am not talking about the super rare or expensive stuff..but things like the large kaisers yacht..for a long time I did not see them and then a slew of them came on the market....
