Of course I wasn't there to remember it myself, and I never knew of any relatives or acquaintences who served in WWI. Most of those vets were gone by the time I was in my teens or earlier. But anytime I think of anything to do with WWI it almost makes my heart ache. Lives thrown away by the thousands and millions for battlefield results that were little more than stalemate after stalemate. WWII was, of course, a momentous event in history, but I think the importance of WWI was far greater. WWI birthed the 20th century and the world we live in today, politically, socially and intellectually. About the only other event of the past 500 years that rivals its impact was the French Revolution.
The most momentous event in History is actually the signing of Magna Carta in 1215, all laws are based on this document, it truly gave mankind its first rights in law.
Also Tommy, Some of my family were at Gallipolli, and they were the lucky ones who survived. I still have the original photo of part of the New Zealand Contingent that was sent to Gallipolli, and as it was as privately taken photo, unless the negative still exists some-where, it is the only surviving photo. Hopefully my family will always treasure all the old family photos.
I had two relatives, cousins of my grandfather, who were at Gallipoli with the Newfoundland Regiment when they arrived in September of 1915, the Regiment's first engagement of the War. Both survived but one was later killed at Monchy les Preux. I have a special interest in the 1919 "Trail of the Caribou" issue which commemorates Gallipoli as well as other battles in which the Newfoundlanders were engaged.
Thanks for sharing. My wife (and daughter) are Kiwis, and we made her watch the movie Galipoli when she was 10. Its an important moment. Just got back from the San Diego service today--on the deck of the Midway with 3 US jets flyover and tons of Aussie and Kiwis...three flags and no Brits
