I found the stamp pictured in amongst some KGV stamps. It should be violet, like the one next to it, but it's completely grey. At first, I thought it was a normal stamp face-down, but of course it isn't.

Any ideas on what's happened here?

(Watermark is Royal Cipher, so 1912-24)

Looks like it could be a changeling. Like the stamp has been out in the sun or been chemically altered.

The 1912-1924 stamps of this series are well known for the number of shades. The interruption by the war of the dyes from Germany played havoc with the inks used. Look at the specialised catalog by Gibbons of the KGV issues and you will see the problem(maybe bonanza?) for collectors.
Before assuming a color changeling, look at the number of colors listed by Gibbons.

I'd go with the fading scenario. The postmark is covering patches of distinct pale violet color which have not faded as much as the rest.

Both cancel and stamp are faded.
