Specialized stamp catalogues are a valuable resource when tackling particular philatelic areas. Is there a list of specialized stamp catalogues available on this forum?
Country-specific well-known ones include Canada's Unitrade for postage stamps and Van Dam for revenues, Spain's Edifil, Italy's Sassone and Bolaffi, Greece's Vlastos and Hellas, Poland's Fischer, Turkey's Isfila, Chan's 3rd edition for China, etc. Then there are the highly specialized catalogues, such as Leo Vosse's Dai Nippon Stamps of the Netherlands East Indies under Japanese Occupation or the Republic of Indonesia from 1945 to 1949, Robert Jack's early Afghanistan catalogues, Nicholas Follansbee's Stamps of Mexico 1856-1910, etc.
Tell us which catalogues you find useful in your area of interest.

For Zeppelin covers and related matters: Sieger's Zeppelin Post Katalog (in German, 22nd [most recent] edition published in 2001); Michel's Zeppelin Specialized Catalogue 2003 (in English); and Frost's 2005 Airship Mail Catalogue (in English). |

I couldn't find anyone listing stamps on ebay or bidStart with Hibernian numbers. I might still get one, but the 2015 Stanley Gibbons Ireland catalog was only US$12.99 on my iPad. That's a price that's hard to beat. |

Quote:I couldn't find anyone listing stamps on ebay or bidStart with Hibernian numbers You're right, Andy. One almost never sees a reference to a Hibernian number. The catalog looks more like a labor of love than money. I bought the catalog for the color illustrations and the increased level of detail over Scott. Also, the way Scott lists the bird definitive series was driving me crazy. I've used Scott/Michel for Germany so long that I'm used to being "bi-catalog." I have never used SG so I can't compare. It may be a better overall buy. Dan |

The bird definitives are the reason why I bought the 5th edition of the Stanley Gibbons Ireland catalog. It helped a great deal, but still didn't seem to get them all right. It's funny. I have access to the following Ireland Bird Definitive listings: 1. Scott 2015 2. Stanley Gibbons 2012 (5th ed) and 2015 (6th ed) 3. Michel None of these catalogs match up on release dates and varieties. I'd be curious to see what Hibernian lists for these. |

I wouldn't be surprised if the Hibernian catalog is different. The Hibernian catalog has an emphasis on phosphor framing that Scott seems to lack. I've never made a comparison. I just hoisted my surrender flag and organized my album pages (Steiner) by the Hibernian organization. If you like, I'd be happy to send you scans of the Hibernian catalog bird series for comparison. I wish I had learned about Michel when I first started collecting Germany many years ago. I've gotten quite profficient at using and understanding Michel over the past 4 years and would recommend them to everyone - and not just for Germany collectors, but for all of Europe (except for British empire). I have to agree with Brian. The Michel catalogs I've used are well-organized and very thorough. Just for grins I picked up an old Michel USA-Spezial (1992). I was surprised at its completeness. If it was in English, it could give Scott Specialized a run for its money. Dan |

I thought Michel made a US Speicialized in English a long time ago. An enterprising person would contact Michel and get a US Distribution license and translate and sell it. Might give Scott a serious run for their money if they a more liberal catalog number use policy. |

I collect only pre-1970 Canadian so the used copy of the 2012 Unitrade catalog meets my needs. |
