NFLD Stamps New And Used.

Hi guys...Was wondering..I looked at NFLD stamps and the same holds true with Canada and other Provinces...In that USED stamps gather more money than new stamps..Such as...

NFLD Scott # 1,5,8,11,11a,12a,17,18,20,21,22,23..etc.

What is to stop some unethical seller to take a MINT stamp, bath it and advertise it as a USED stamp with no cancel..???

Nothing. But it is then unused. Not used.

I meant an unethical seller could try to pass it off as a used stamp and say (little) or NO cancel..That's all I meant.

I believe this unethical behavior occurs and some unethical individuals can easily manipulate an unused mint stamp to appear used. only an expert can tell a proper ink cancel.

I'd go a step further and say that one could also do the same, and put it on a cover to make it worth even more. I see a current cover now on ebay that I am of the opinion is false--to be clear : a real authentic stamp from Newfoundland, changed from mint to used, on an authentic period envelope, with its original stamp removed, and the manipulated authentic stamp affixed in its spot (using the authentic original gum to affix it) and a forged cancel. its a perfect non-forgery forgery. we all need to be very careful to only buy from legit sellers, and one who accept returns without question.

Unless some attempt is made to fake a cancel, all the person has done is turn it into a "no gum" stamp...unused, MNG, pick your favorite epithet.

A few early Newfoundland have a note in Unitrade that mint with gum earns a 100% premium. Looking at the CVs in my copy, a person who soaked an 11 with gum to get a "used" 11 shot himself in the foot. An 11 with gum is a 100% premium to CV. Maybe I'm reading that wrong. I spend more time with the Scott Classic than Unitrade.

The Scott Classic lists a CV for some "without gum" stamps that should have had gum, and it is generally a steep decline in CV. Without evidence of a good cancel, a savvy buyer is going to walk right past (absent a significant discount from CV).

If there is no cancel, then Cjd's comments apply. If cancelled, I'd negotiate with the seller a deal to return the stamp if it proves bogus and then send it to the Green Foundation for an opinion. This obviously applies especially to the high value items. It also suggests you buy from a reputable dealer who can't stand the negative reaction if he/she doesn't honour a claim.
