Hi,

Does any one know the meaning of the initials "PTO" on a cover. I seem to see it only on a cover with postage due and thought it might be a French abbreviation. can't find the answer via Google.

Thanks in advance,

Larry

"Please Turn Over". Usually found when some stamps have been placed on the back of the cover.

What country is it from? "Porto" is a term for postage due in many countries, and it could be an abbreviation for that. I'm somewhat doubtful of that, however. Just a theory.

"PTO" is not listed in the APS acronyms list: http://stamps.org/Acronyms

Here are other possibilities: http://www.acronymfinder.com/PTO.html

Here are interesting "PTO" covers from the London Blitz 1941: http://www.varclassifieds.com/great...to-i1619709/

Based on this discussion it looks like "Please Turn Over" is a winner:
