In January of 2017, Ireland began their 9th definitive series (A history of Ireland in 100 Objects) by issuing eight computer-vended stamps. One of these stamps shows "the Broighter Boat", a fine (24k) gold artifact in the shape of a boat. From wikipedia, "The Broighter hoard is a hoard of gold artifacts from the Iron Age of the 1st century B.C. that were found in 1896...on farmland near Limavady...Northern Ireland. The hoard includes a 7.25 inch-long (18.4 cm.) gold boat. The boat is a unique find that weighs 2 oz. (85 gms.)...(It) suggests that the hoard was a votive deposit to the Celtic sea god Manannan mac Lir."  |
