Hello all, We know very little about earlier Australian stamps but have a heap of postcards, mostly posted in Brisbane and with 1d stamps of Queensland which was obviously the postcard rate at the time. Sorting through them I noticed one had a perfin on the stamp. Unfortunately we cannot work out what it is. We have 'fiddled' with the image and tried all sorts of enhancements but still cannot figure out the perfin. Does anyone recognise this by any chance. Any help or suggestions welcomed. Thanks and regards Ron and Eunice.

Top mid is "o" right side of "o" is upside down "U"
Bottom mid is "g" or "9" right side of this looks like random punctures or an up side down "L".
But I am sure you already know this.Good luck.
Private perfin that have been over used or made not to last long adds to the distress of trying to discern them. |

I may be wrong here, but, the pattern appears to be E B / Ltd.
What appears to be an upsidown "U" is really the "L" showing of showing???
If it is EB / Ltd, sorry, I do not have information on this pattern.

Have you tried putting some tracing paper over the stamp and then rubbing with a really soft pencil (4B or softer)? That often helps with bringing out the perfin. |

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions. We will try the suggestion from Tim and see what happens there. We appreciate the responses and if/when we get to the bottom of it we will, of course, post the result. Regards to all Ron and Eunice. |

Red Hot Rod, Many thanks for that - we are impressed. Firstly, I didn't think of looking at it upside down (duh) Secondly, had it just been a stamp and not used on a card we would not have needed to ask<grin> Clever thinking to mark the dots in blue! Good to be in touch again but so far as the 'journalism' is concerned Eunice is not in print now and all our 'stuff' goes up on our website at

For anyone else interested there is a heap of philatelic content with about 150 old letters, GB stamps from KEVIII to QEII, Australia etc. Social only and advert. free.
Rod, if you want, you can contact us off list on the address on the site. Thanks again and appreciate your time and effort. Best regards Ron and Eunice

Hello Ron, Yes, I have a fairly extensive PERFIN List, gradually growing but vastly inadequate without paying, what I consider expensive specialty catalogues. With yours I employed Google, with the text string "EB/Ltd Queensland Perfin", and with luck of the Irish, it popped up. Doesn't always happen. Cheers Ron. PS: If one becomes desperate, you can go to the PERFIN Club Auction sheets and do a "CTRL F " and search the sheet It has solved the odd query that way. PPS: If you want chapter and verse, Ron Check out Mr.Dave Elsmore's treatise http://www.perfins.com.au/OZ-Revenu...Perfins.html |
