If this is real, It's $$$$$ ! It is listed in Michel, Germany, between 373 & 374. Listed value 22000.00 DM in 1987. It does point out the "Muster" overprint in the note. But my German not so good.

Everything looks 'fishy'. The printing doesn't look correct, there is no watermark showing, and either there are too many perforations, or the item is too large.

It appears to be a forgery. The overprint is too sloppy and the perforations are incorrect.

Would someone be kind enough to explain the history of this stamp? (No mention is made of it in my SG Germany specialized or Scott).

The original unissued stamp was perforated 13 x 13.75 and the posted example must be at least perforated 15.
It is overprinted with a rubber stamp "MUSTER" which means sample and what we would call SPECIMEN.

Jenny,

The only info I have is from the blurb in Michel. It states that MiNr X was to be issued in November 1961, but was withdrawn a few days before the announced date of initial sale. Available copies with rubber handstamp "Muster" on the lower edge are samples sent to the post offices.

Handstamped copies catalog in 2015 Michel at €12,000. Un-handstamped copies also exist, but no price is given in Michel (this is done when there is insufficient data to establish a market price).

I searched the usual German auctionhouses, and I didn't see one for sale or sold in recent months. There is an un-handstamped copy currently for auction, with an estimated hammer price of €4,000-5,000.

PostmasterGS thanks much for the explanation. I would guess it was withdrawn due to the depiction, but replaced by this stamp in 1962:
