Other than being a pack rat at times, this is not something that I collect. I have no idea where it came from. But I'm wondering if this was just a souvenir that the merchant added to his sales ticket or if there was some sort of tax paid with that stamp? I'd love to hear your take on it.

Postage. Don't know the year, I only have a 2003 Scotts. But pretty worthless I'd bet. St. Vincent is one of those countries who will put anything on a stamp.

Sorry, part of 1987 series of Caribbean Currency.

I looked on ebay for examples and kind of figured as a stamp the value wasn't much. I was just wondering about it being attached to the receipt for fishing tackle. If this was mandated somehow or a local custom or if the merchant did it just for a lark.

It not being canceled and the 10 cent cost on a $40.00 purchase rules out it being any kind of tax or revenue stamp . My guess it is someone playing around.

I would guess that St Vincent still had stamp duty on receipts the same as the UK used to have and this 10c stamp is paying the tax.

The UK had the rate fixed at 2d for many years up to 1971 when the tax was abolished.

"If you travel enough, obtaining revenue stamps may be very easy (and at no extra cost to you). A few years ago, I was on the island of St. Kitts (Caribbean) and I purchased a postcard from a souvenir shop. The receipt that I was given had a 10c postage stamp on it to indicate that I paid some sort of tax on that card! In 1993 I was on the island of St. Vincent and purchased a bottle of beer at a grocery store; on the back of the receipt was a stamp affixed !"

I found that just now doing a Google search. Maybe that answers my own question. Though in that case it brings up another question which is "is there any extra value to the item even though this is a non=postal use of the stamp?" I doubt anybody other than a stamp collector would bother hanging onto the receipt. Or would they?

John, I'd say yes there's some value, at least to a collector, of a stamp being used for something other than it's intended purpose. But as floortrader pointed out, it's not canceled, or 'tied to' the receipt, so there's no way of knowing if it was actually used for that, got stuck there accidentally or, as he wrote, someone was playing around.
