I think this is an obliteration cancel. Numbers 493 - 498 are T.P.O.'s or
Travelling Post office.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me in a shortly.

Regular cancellation. IIRC they put this type of cancel into service in 1864. The number provides location of the servicing post office.

rascal:
nope.

wert:
Bog standard England and Wales-style numeral cancellation of the type that replaced the Maltese Cross in 1844.
498 was the numeral assigned to Manchester, so it is a fairly common one.

The full list of numerals can be seen at: http://www.philatelicsannex.org/ref...ference.html if you look under "T" for Stuart Tanner.

Manchester is correct. My error.

There is a 498 Obliterator assigned to T.P.O.'s on early British stamps but it is more of a diamond shape and was used in Ireland.

I was unable to open the web site noted by Chipg because my computer does not have Microsoft Excel.

I use "A History Of British Postmarks" by J H Daniels which was published in 1898. This book is free on the Google Books Web Site.

There are 3 lists: London and English Offices, Scottish Offices and Irish Offices. You need to learn the basic different shapes of the Obliterators in order to use the correct list. That was my mistake and I apologize for the incorrect information.

Thanks Wert
I hardly ever use LibreOffice or OpenOffice and completely forgot that I could open Excel files with those programs.
It worked fine. Thanks for the reminder.
