It is a pretty common first day cover of an historic event that can be purchased for a dollar or two.

Very nice first day cover (FDC), but also very common. Also addressed, which in this case detracts from its retail value even though it adds to its sentimental value. This is the type of cover that is found in the dealer dime/quarter cover bin. Most US FDCs from 1950s onwards with mass produced cachets are listed at the catalog minimum value.

I find it difficult to agree with evaluators who say an addressed FDC has a decreased value.

Why most FDCs (addressed or not) have low value is a mystery to me.

Surely, a cover with a first day cancel should be worth much more than a cover with any other cancellation......but, in most cases, noooooo.

Yeah, yeah.....the FDC thing is a money grab for the Post Offices of a lot of countries; but, that doesn't make it a bad or under-valued thing.

I guess the best aspect of low-value FDCs is more people who like/collect them can buy them at low prices.

That's what I was assuming, but I wasn't sure. Thanks to those who responded.

By the way, I have a few more of these types of things if anyone's interested in seeing them.

If anyone's interested in these details, the stamp is Scott #1193 and has a "catalog value" of $3.00 (however, typical secondary market value is only 10% or 30% of catalog value), meaning that the cover is probably worth a dollar or so.

In reviewing recent E-bay "sold" listings, one of the covers with an address and the same cachet sold for $1.10 and another for $1.85. (Space-themed covers typically have a little more desirability and a bit more value than covers commemorating other subjects.)

Scott 1193 is listed for sale at Mystic for minimal value, both used and mint. It is hardly catalogued at $3.00

The fact that this cover is addressed to a physician in the early 1960s suggests that on the reverse you may find an indicia of some kind that associates it with Ayerst laboratories. This was a pharmaceutical company that pitched various preparations with ad copy they sent out in Artcraft first day covers. Does this one still have contents?

No premium for that, unfortunately. Still a 25-50cent cover.

You were probably looking at the stamp price. The price quoted by wt1 is for the First Day Cover -- but that's for an unaddressed cover.
