Going through a stack of pages, I ran across this one today. Found a couple online for high prices but the information available and my lack of experience (still) suggests I seek out experienced opinions. So .... I'm back. :-)

Checked the perfs - 11 1/2 on 4 sides, though the perf lines, especially on the bottom aren't quite straight. Does anybody have an idea of how high the numbers went on the pieces? Or, where I could find the information. Sorry I didn't get a scan of the back, but it is still mounted with a plastic covering. When necessary, I'll take it off, but I still need to create a safe place to store these stamps that I open up.

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

The examples of this souvenir sheet that I found online all were with low numbers.

What`s interesting about this piece is that it doesn`t have the expected overprint.

KGB - I saw 3 or so that went through auction and noticed that they had 3 or 4 digit numbers, but I have yet to reference to just how high the number go and over what period of time.

I'm afraid I don't follow - should it have an overprint? Scott's says that it is for the '38-'39, or am I reading the wrong end?

It is a Scott 585c. I see them on stamps2go for $8-$13. Nice piece for your collection.

1847bill - Thank you. The Lady is making noises about 'organizing' her old collection and perhaps adding to it. I'll suggest that she do that and put it back in. :-)

Here`s an example of the overprint, though this one is upside down, which I gather isn`t too uncommon.

KGB - Interesting on the overprint, besides being upside down. In my wanderings last night, I came across one, without the overprint that was in the 6 digit range and also perfed, so I presume that they aren't all that uncommon. And, as 1847bill suggested, not that valuable.

Hoping someone drops by who can suggest a source that points to key factors that determine one is real or a forgery/fake, though.

As a souvenir sheet, I think it`s labeled ED764.

I can see the Spanish government printing a lot of these. Collectors would have been interested in a piece like this one, though I don`t really think Spanish-American relations were all that cordial at this time in history.

Still, there`s something strange about the stamp having the air mail overprint and the careless way the opt. was added. I wonder how common it is to create both a regular and an air mail stamp at the same time with the very same stamp. It sounds like a good quiz question!

I`ll try to do more research when I return from Mass.

KGB - I've got an older issue of Scott's and it has the C97 overprint for the 585 surcharge dated to June 1 1938. It looks like I initially read it wrong when I mentioned the '38-'39. Sorry about that. Seeing the image you posted got me on the right path. Thank you.

So, I guess they put out a lot between '36 and '38, before they started the surcharge in June of '38. (at least, I think I got it straight this time)

walk, I don't know. The lowest numbered souvenir sheets have the overprint and the higher numbers don't. Weird.

KGB - Yes, that is interesting. It makes me wonder if they used a second set of numbers for the overprint. 2 years after the fact, just started numbering again with the overprint.

KGB - In fact, that makes me start to wonder if the non-perfs are numbered independently from the perf souvenir sheets.
