Scanning Brings Out More Details

I was scanning some Austrian stamps to post in the Engravers
thread and noticed some details I hadn't seen before.

Since most Austrian combination stamps from the sixties on
where printed one colour engraved combined with either one or multi photogravure (sometimes with offset) I was surprised to see this one with 2 colours engraved via the Giori process.

I must have looked at this stamp dozens of times in the last 40 years
and my eyes just saw the sepia engraved area and believed the other
2 colours were photogravure.

This is another Austrian stamp that I previously thought was
printed engraved 1 colour (green) and photogravure for the gold lettering.

But now I see that it has 2 engraved colours.
No photogravure.

using the Giori type of process.

Here is another Austrian stamp where two engraved colours
(black & red purple for the lettering) were used, combined with multicolour photogravure.

I just wonder why the OeSD didn't print multicolour engraved stamps since it appears they had the capabilities.

In 1968 the State Printer bought a 3 colour recess press.

In March 1973 started using a 7 colour Goebel press (3 colour recess, 4 colour photogravure)

I'm guessing that photogravure was used for the background color of the above stamp because this printing process gives superlative gradations of shade.

Bob I agree that using photogravure printing properly
in combination with engraving can produce excellent work.
And the Austrian State Printer for the most part printed
some beautiful stamps this way.
But what always puzzled me was why they didnt go the way
of multicolour engraving like the French with their TD6 or
the Czech die presses or the Swedish Stamp Printing works
or even the BEP with the Giori presses.
The OeSD had some of the best engravers and a very experienced
printing staff so I'm sure they could have handled any
pure multicolour engraving techniques.

I agree. It is probably a matter of "taste" or preference.
