Hi All

I have these two different cancellations of Russia. One is a #1 in a triangle enclosed inside a circular cancel and the other is a #1 in a rectangle enclosed in a circular cancel. Can I assume that because they are both #1, that they are both used from Moscow? Also, are these cancels scarce or common?

Thanks a lot

Hi Bujutsu,

As you guessed the first postmark with the number 1 in a triangle within an ellipse is from Moscow.

However, the second postmark with the number 1 in a square within a circle is from St Petersburg.

These and others like them are from the individual offices of the Moscow and St Petersburg town posts. The Moscow ones are all in ellipses while the St Petersburg ones are all in circles. In most cases the different offices used different shapes with the circle or ellipse for each office.

The different office postmarks are fun to collect and seem reasonably common.

Hi all

I found this Russian stamp among a large accumulation of WW stamps. It is Russian, and, I am guessing that it was issued in the late 1930s or early 1940s, but, cannot find it in Scott's. Would some member please let me know the Scott cat # for this?

Thank you

Chimo
