1789 Letter From Carlsbad Part Two,

The folded letter sheet from Carlsbad was sealed in wax with a crest
showing a shield with a nine point crown on top and half of a wooden wheel in the lower portion with the latin motto "Carpe Horam" (pluck/or seize the hour).
There is a two page letter in French dated 10 June 1789, which begins: I received my dear and amiable friend your charming letter at a moment when I am ill in body and spirit....That's about as far as I can go. There is also a paragraph written by another writer.
Perhaps the writer was not a resident of Carlsbad, but rather a nobleman visitor seeking the healing mineral water treatments of that famous spa town.

Interesting, but why not post this with the original?

owen, the seal is of interest as it might reflect the status of the sender. Also, considering the motto, one might consider the half-wheel as, instead, a sundial.

I purchase the cover on ebay for the postmark and ended up with a little piece of history and a broader knowledge and appreciation of European history. What a hobby!

It is strange that the acute accents only and - which is incredible - the â in tâcherai - have resisted change.

Florian, I can't help you with the French phrase, but I read the letter in light of the links to Count Chotek you provided,especially
the part which states that in "1776 he was Councilor at the chancellery.In 1788,( a year before he wrote the letter) he allegedly took his resignation for health reasons, but mainly because he did not have a friendly relationship with Emperor Joseph II." Which, perhaps,explains the maladies of both body and mind he mentions in the letter. To me,that was the count's mind set at the time of writing.
However,under the reign of Emperor Leopold II, he was "reinstated", and in 1802,was elevated to Minister of State and was eventually awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece. A really big deal! A 19th century success story.
Postal history is more than philately to me, it's the story that makes it worthwhile. So, thank you again for giving me the keys to unlocking a door I never could have unlocked myself.

owenthom - I am impressed with your way of presenting postal history items accompanied by illustrative material researched with great care and - what is more - with insight into things that might seem worlds and centuries apart.

I appreciate your idea of the story behind the item that makes postal history worthwhile. The nearest I came to much the same concept was when I started a collection of "what postmen used to carry in their bags" consisting mostly of postcards (and even a few letters) containing memorable messages, occasionally offered for a few pence in second-hand bookshops about two decades ago. Arranged by the date of the postmark, kept in hand-made paper boxes and no longer added to, I turn to them as eye-witnesses of events and the atmosphere whenever I am reminded of something mentioned in them while reading a book or watching a documentary on TV.
