Hello,
Sorting through some Mexican stamps I found this somewhat oddly canceled one. The first one has a normal cancel. I think it is a Scotts 310 from 1910 (sorry for problems with image, still having problems with macro on camera).

The other is the odd one. It has "Gobenero Constitutionisa" = Constitutional Government, printed vertically on it. It also had the sort of fancy cancel. The blank spaces in the cancel are used to spell out" G.P.?.M." on the top, seems to have a 5 in middle and clearly says "Centavos" on the bottom.

Any ideas as to what the story is here?

JP

JP,

I put on my glasses with the wrong prescription and that made the pics a little more clearer

Looks like the top stamp that is overprinted "GOBIERNO CONSTITUCIONALISTA" is Scott # 423. You can check for the "GONSTITUCIONALISTA" (G instead of C) variety, which appears on less than 10% of the stamps.

I believe the bottom stamp is a 5c on 1c surcharge, Scott #577.

Boy, I'm making a lot of posting mistakes. Not a good way to start here at this Forum.

My apologies, apparently I clicked incorrectly on the scroll bar and got the 2 pics mixed up.

The top stamp is Mexico #310, as you stated. I cannot make out the cancel.

The bottom stamp is Mexico #582. As stated earlier, you can check for the "GONSTITUCIONALISTA" (G instead of C) variety, which appears on less than 10% of the stamps.

Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry for the blurry photos, I need to practice getting good photos that I can post here. I just checked the stamp, the word Constitutionalista starts with a C, not a G. I also realized that the overprinted stamp was never used - gum is still intact. When I first saw it I just assumed it was a cancel, not an overprint.

Anyone know the story behind this. Was it altered to help fund one of the factions (presumably the Constitutionalistas) in the Mexican Civil War?

Thanks for the info,

JP
