ffiisshh22, it dawns on me that I don't really know what you are asking, but when has that stopped me before? If you want an 1840-1940 album, here are your main options:
Option 1: Scott "Blue" International. As you imply, the Blue Internationals contains only 35,000 out of a possible 50,000 basic stamps (i.e., ignoring watermarks, perforations, etc.). The only way to expand them is by adding your own pages.
Option 2: Minkus Supreme Global. More comprehensive than the Blue Internationals, but still missing thousands of basic stamps. Albums go past 1940 at least until 1952. Again, only way is to expand is through adding your own pages (which is more difficult to do with the Supreme Global than with the latest version of the Blue).
Option 3: Scott "Brown" Internationals. Attempt to provide spaces for all major Scott numbers. You can find these used (and almost always hard bound) on
ebay and other sites or buy the Vintage Reproduction authorized reprint. (The only way, incidentally, to get 1939-1940.) The Vintage Reproductions are expensive but a class product.
Option 4: Scott Specialty Albums or Minkus Specialty Albums. Comprehensive worldwide collections have been housed in both. More expensive than any of the other options. Better reflect changes in the more recent Scott catalogs than the Browns. Many albums are out-of-print and can only be bought used. You won't be able to restrict to 1840-1940.
Option 5: Steiner print your own pages (
http://www.stampalbums.com/). $30 for the computer files to print your own pages; who is knowing the cost for the paper and binders although this can be amortized over the years as your collection grows).
A lot of us on this Board can expound on any of these options.
