Hi Robert, It may be that your older scanner optical resolution is 1200 and the 2400 dpi is an interpolated (software algorithm) resolution. You can read more on this here http://www.nuance.com/scannerguide/...solution.asp
51studebaker is correct, but you also have to consider the resolution of your display.
What I mean is that if you scan a stamp at 300dpi and also 2,400 dpi and then display them both at a 300 dpi resolution, then there will be very little difference in the image. But as you then zoom in the same amount on both images the 2,400 dpi one will provide better imagery and the 300dpi will become blurred.
