The Scott Specialized is just what the title suggests, it is more specialized than the regular catalog. It all depends on what you collect if it is worth investing in one, but you can always get an older copy on E-Bay!
Scott has 2 different types of catalogs, standard and specialized. The standard catalog has a price for a single stamp in used and unused condition and that's about it. They might list some of the better known varieties on some stamps, but generally each major listing has a single line with a price for used and a price for unused.
Specialized catalogs go into much more detail and provide values for pairs, blocks, stamps on cover, different types of cancellations, first day covers, etc. If you just want to collect a single copy of each stamp, a standard catalog is probably OK. If you want to collect different varieties, color shades, postmarks, covers, etc, you'll want a specialized catalog.
Additionally if you so desire the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue: Stamps and Covers of the World (Including US)1840-1940 contains much more details.
I have a 2013 Scott United States Pocket Stamp Catalogue that I got new for 15.00, a closeout from a book dealer. It seems to fit my needs, at least so far.
