I was told this is a Double oval C precancel that when I looked it up was only used on postage dues from march 1881 to june 1881 in the purple color. Anyone got a clue as to value

Jim, that is a cancel, not a precancel. I have no earthly idea if there is any value attached!

Sorry about that! I guess it is a local precancel; we'll have to wait on Chasa to chime in to let us know if it has any value!

These are considered precancels, although they are not listed in the PSS Town & Type catalog. You can find them in Dave Smith's Silent Precancels. They are scarce, especially on cover. Silent Precancels lists them at 50 USD off cover and 300 USD on cover. This is the 1995 version price, I don't have the more recent catalog which may be higher.
