Hahaha, I thought that mark was part of the cancelling process!

EDIT: I'm obviously no expert.

Wert, I'm constantly amazed at what you show us. Keep it up please!

Your example shows that CANADA 8 is in its normal position and I would have thought that both reds were printed at the same time, but guess they weren't.

Here's the normal red line below the blue.

That is strange. At first sight it looks like there was a printing plate for just that line as none of the other reds are moved. That does not make sense.

I see that BOTH the two stamps of this issue as shown in Unitrade have this line. BUT !! of the 5 examples I have of (single + inscription block of 4 of each) NONE have any trace of this line at all.

Thanks blackjag...Your example shows the red line in the position that Unitrade shows as a constant, but mine is the same line but inside the blue portion of the design.

And Anthraquinone, I did go trough about 100 of my stamps and noticed colour shifts from outside the blue border to almost half way into the border, but this is the only one with that red line...interesting to say the least.

I wonder if it is a constant printing variety that Unitrade happened to use for their scans. But it is strange it affects both values.

Has anyone got any complete sheets that may throw some light on this? There should be plenty out there.

I went though what is currently on ebay and none of the items seem to have this line. That includes a complete pane of 50. Unitrade says this issue was printed from 2wo panes. I have also asked the Unitrade editor about this and the source of their illustrations.

Here is what I replied to "Anthraquinone", with some editing/additional info for here:

Here is a link to an article I wrote over 20 years ago about the varieties found on the 8c UPU stamp (Scott 648). It was reprinted in the Corgi Times back in 1995.

http://www.adminware.ca/newsgroups/648.pdf

I found 2 examples in some 1,039 used examples in my collection. It is not common.

It is stated earlier here on this thread that the "Unitrade says this issue was printed from 2wo panes." (a direct copy/paste). The Unitrade does *not* say this issue was printed from two panes. The pane arrangement for these stamps has not yet been reported.

The illustration in the Unitrade is from my own collection (one of the two examples noted above). On my second example, the red line just touches the bottom of the blue.

The position of the red line can vary due to colour shifts. In my example, the red line is below the blue; in "wert"'s example from the SCF, his red line is on the blue. Both are the exact same variety. I compared his example with mine (in Adobe Photoshop) and the distance from the red 'Canada 8' at the top of the stamp, to the red line at the bottom of the stamp, are identical.

Our two varieties may appear to be in "different positions", but they are not. One *cannot* compare the position of varieties of multi-colour stamps to other colours on the same stamp. There can/will always be a difference between the position of the different colours due to normal colour shifting of multi-coloured issues.

studystamps..I am in agreement with you that colour shifts play an important part as to where the line is situated, but what I don't realize is if both "Canada 8" and the "RED" line are printed at the same time, then why is not "Canada 8" also shifted upwards..??

Hi Wert,

Robin stated "I compared his example with mine (in Adobe Photoshop) and the distance from the red 'Canada 8' at the top of the stamp, to the red line at the bottom of the stamp, are identical."

Stating that the red is printed at the same time and the "Canada 8" moves up/down with reference to the line.

Sorry about the error in saying two plates of 50 were used. Robin pointed out my error.

So it appears that this is "just" some damage to the red plate that occurred at some time during the printing. Perhaps a positional example will turn up at some time.

What is somewhat confusing is the line at the bottom of both values as illustrated in Unitrade or at least in my 2012 volume. These are in a different place. shorter and very straight. I wonder where the illustration came from as it appears not to be the issued stamp.
