I inherited my Grandfather's collection of stamps. I know nothing about the hobby, so I thought I'd share with you what looks to be a prized part of his collection.

My grandfather was a graphic artist and created these boards that contain stamps and envelopes. They contain some of his own illustrations as well as a photo of the moon landing and a Civil War newspaper.

Any explanation to help me understand the value/significance of some of these stamps and envelopes is greatly appreciated!

Welcome! Those are wonderful pieces of art! As a fellow graphic artist, I just don't see all that much hand illustration anymore. Looks like he was an artist during the "Mad Men" era of advertising. As for value, I would put this in the "priceless family heirloom" category.

Hi JFonzy, welcome to the SCF. Your grandfather built a nice collection and had interest in some nice patriotic themes. He also clearly took his hobby enjoyment to another level by incorporating the artistic aspect to the stamps. It is a very nice collection.

I like the submarine art and the cover with the New London, CT Sub Pen cancel. It is nice piece of art.

I can only comment on the stamps and by no means am I an expert, but the value of the collection from a stamps aspect was mostly in the enjoyment, relaxation, and learning that your grandfather experienced. While the financial value might be nominal, it is beside the point. Now you have the collection to learn about and appreciate. I would recommend to find a place to hang the art, write it up and why these things were important to your grandfather, it tells a bit about who he was, and then be prepared to pass it on to your grandchildren.

Perhaps you will build upon it in the meantime with your own story and interests.

Perhaps this is the gift your grandfather wanted you to have.

Thanks for posting the collection it was very nice to view it.

Wow! What a beautiful presentation!

(I can't help but add that my father used to deliver the Brooklyn Eagle when he was a boy. In fact, he was excused from serving the early Mass on Sundays as he had his deliveries to make. He didn't care for Saturdays, though, as this was collection day. Can you imagine having a 12-year-old collecting payment in today's world?)

Thanks for the welcome!

Yes, he was an amazing artist! These may have been made for a show at one time, I'm not sure. I wish I knew more about the story behind them.

Very nice collection and probably worth something to a collector of FDC material.
