Cook Islands stamps commonly use New Zealand-type watermarks. Could you describe the stamp - denomination and year - please? Scott isn"'t widely used outside the US!
The stamp in question is scott #116. Issue of 1944-48. 1/2p dk ol grn & blk. Perf. 14 wmk 253. I am trying to separate it from scott # 91 which is from the 1933-36 issue. Similar but with wmk 61. I am trying to id the stamp but am also interested in continuing my education on how to use the scott catalog. I must be overlooking something. That watermark is used for many issues starting in 1937. It must be illustrated in scott somewhere.
Ron The 1/2d from 1933-36 has a single-lined NZ and star watermark. The 1944-48 issue uses a similar, but multiple, watermark, which is, I think, sideways on the 1/2d. Gibbons notes that, in the first, the watermark units are in vertical columns, widely spaced, whilst, in the second, the units are arranged alternately in horizontal rows closely spread. Geoff
