Hi guys...This may be a stupid question, but every cover I have come across with the 1898 Map Stamp has a cancel in the year 1899 or later..Were they NOT used in 1898 on covers..??
Well Wert if you check your trusty Unitrade it states that for Scott 85 there are only 10 recorded covers dated on the first day of issue, December 7, 1898. The Official Day of Issue was December 25, 1898. The ERA (earliest recorded date) for Scott 86 is December 17, 1898
So I guess most of 20 million were affixed to letters in the New Year.
A really popular stamp so many collectors getting those few available early covers. The FDC is worth quite a bit itself. Quite a few covers with 1900 dates as well.
December 25, 1898 was the first day of Empire Penny Postage. Map stamp covers postmarked on that date and mailed to GB or participating British colonies tend to command pretty hefty prices. It is perhaps interesting to note that from December 25 to 31, 1898 it was cheape to send a letter to India (2¢) than to a neighboring town (3¢)!
