I get what you're saying, ikeyPikey, but by that logic, why not just crop the corner off of the official USPS FDC and paste it on top of my cover?

It would save me the trouble of having to send in my covers for cancellation at all!

No, I'm with you: it needs to be a presidential platform. It's the only way to fix the system.

Got a couple more back in the mail today:

Yes, the Hendrix really did just come back today, despite the 2014 postmark. I was just writing for a circular date stamp, but apparently the postmaster dug out an old pictorial stamp. I don't mind at all! (I do wish the stamps were actually cancelled, however...)

I'm really interested in this aspect of the hobby. To me, custom FDCs seem to fall into two areas... historical interest, and artistic interest. The ones I love the best fall into both. I don't think monetary value really has any business being a primary consideration for this type of collecting; a person should buy art they appreciate and enjoy, regardless of value... IMO. I collect what I like & enjoy, and I've been thinking it might be neat to try my hand at creating some as well.

I got these back in the mail today. I tried to evoke, with these covers, a pirate crew with a golden locket that they believe leads to a treasure-filled cave on a distant island. Upon arrival, they discover that the cave holds no riches, and that the natural beauty of Arecibo, Puerto Rico is the true treasure.

I used Renoir's still-life "Poires" (painted around 1890) as the focal point of these FDCs, with a golden flourish in the lower-right corner.
