Annoying Auction Scenario: Has This Happened To You?

Things go wrong - all that you can expect is that the auctioneer does its best to put things right. I once had the opposite experience. I looked at the "prices realised" on an auction site and found that I'd won several lots of cards at prices below the estimate. This seemed odd. Sure enough, later that day, I was telephoned by a highly apologetic man from the auction house, who explained that a number of e-mail bids had been received by their system, but, for some reason, had not reached the auctioneer. Mine was one of these. Quite a mess to sort out with buyers, and compensation needed for sellers.

I make more mistakes myself. Late at night, tired, filling in a bid form, accidentally transpose a couple of numbers ... what on earth is this I've won?

I would like to listen-in on the auctioneers' stories about us.

The most annoying thing that has happened to me was when the Auction House has not entered my bids which were handed to them the day before the sale and when questioned about it get a terse reply " we were very busy at that time and were short staffed and didn't have time to double check.

The only word I can think of is " incompetence ",

About 4 years ago I bid on an auction by submitting a bidsheet, usually I attend this auction but I was traveling and couldn't attend. I bid on 8 items with bids between $350 and $800 but I limited my purchases to $2000. As soon as I got to the hotel I checked the auction and I was happy to see the first 5 items sold for less than my bids. However when I checked my bidder id it showed me winning nothing.

I knew they there still in session so I called and reached the woman who manages the office. She checked and the auctioneer had misread my limit as $200 and so none of my bids were entered. I thought I was out of luck but she asked me to give her and hour. She called back and told me a couple lots had been paid for and taken, but she redid the bids on the ones still in the office and I had won 3 for about $1800. I briefly considered telling her to forget it that it wouldn't be fair to the bidders who had won the lots originally but I didn't and just took the 3 she gave me.

Just to close the loop on this thread, this morning I received both of the lots I purchased and am extremely pleased to have won them.

KRELYEA----That's funny ........easy explaination ,those lots most likely were owned by the auction house and the original buyers have not been notified of their winnings and if they thought they won them at their maxnium bid ,they were informed of a auctioneer error ,so the firm got a higher price .

most probably the auction house had sold the items to postal bidders and very little effort for them to adjust the sale to you,
