I have an interest in collecting the stamps of Mexico. Are there any links to online resources that someone may recommend? Thanks in advance.

Agree with smauggie. MEPSI is worth checking out. I've been a member 3 1/2 years and really enjoy their well-done quarterly journal. Have also picked up several reference books.
At the start of the Mexico section of the Scott Classic Specialized catalogue is this statement: "District Overprints: ........some of the District overprints are rare and command high prices...." You'll need the Follansbee catalog to figure this out. May be a link on the MEPSI web site or you can ask.
Mexico offers a seemingly endless array of varieties. As an example, the 1879 to 1883 issues for foreign mail (Scott #123-145; and maybe 146-149) are about 25-27 in number. The Stamp Finder catalog for these issues lists over 1,900 District/year combinations; over 400 errors & varieties; 200 re-issued varieties. Then there are the modern Exporta issues......... Hope you realize what you're getting into; a really seductive country to collect. Enjoy.

If you like overprints, Mexico's got them. Overprints on overprints. Overprints on overprints on overprints. |

I agree Mexico's philatelic history is interesting. The only thing Mexican philately lacks is a standard specialized catalog a la the RMH catalog for Brazil or the Jalil for Argentina. MEPSI has a wealth of information on different aspects and eras of Mexican philately available for members and even the general public, but it would be a great boost to Mexican philately if all that accumulated knowledge could be redacted into a single catalog the way Unitrade has done for Canada. |

DJCMHOH wrote: "the only thing Mexican philately lacks is a standard specialized catalog........." That's probably true; but I wonder how big such a catalog might be. Given what I referenced earlier about just the Foreign Mail issues, a standard catalog would probably be the same size as a couple of the current Scott catalogs. And, somebody needs to do it, which means dealing with all sorts of copyright issues. May be a task with hard to surmount barriers.
The Follansbee catalog I mentioned is an excellent resource, but covers only 1856 to 1910. Another good reference, by long time MEPSI member Peter Taylor, is "Postmarks of Mexico 1821 to 1883." That is a two volume, spiral bound, set; each an inch thick (2 1/2 cm).
Jerry: I sent you an e-mail to get a copy of your Mexico table. Thanks for making that available. Steve |

MEPSI puts out a smashing quarterly in full color. They offer internet sales to members with some real bargains available.Mexico is only a secondary interest for me but I can recommend membership to anyone even casually interested. |

Mexico sounds like an interesting area to pursue. Just curious, what album/storage system do you all used for your Mexico collections?

Chris: you asked about how us Mexico collectors store our collections. For now, I'm using a Scott International (Big Blue) jumbo binder that holds/will hold trimmed Mexico Scott Specialty pages through 1940, some quadrilled pages, and regular International pages 1940 through about 1965.
I say "for now" because I may outgrow this binder. It holds a modified North America collection; containing my US & territories, Canada & Provinces, Mexico; also independent Cuba through 1960, Greenland, St. Pierre & Miquelon, UN-New York. Cut-off ranges from 1967 for US to 1973 for Canada; then Greenland, St. Pierre, UN through 1965 (corresponding to Parts I to V of the Big Blue International). |

Geoff: Those Steiner pages in Spanish? Didn't know they exist. Thanks.
Climber Steve: Thanks, I would suspect that Scott Speciality pages would be a good choice.

I too collect Mexico stamps. I really enjoy the early district overprints. I have started collecting as many districts for each stamp as well. I picked up the introduction to the stamps of Mexico by dale pulver fron Amazon. Currently listing used at about $7.00. could you, jbcev80, send me a copy of that Scott based tabled? Thanks in advance Chris |

Chris: should have clarified that couple years ago, I bought a Mexico collection in a battered Scott Specialty album. Most of the pages are in good shape and thus useable for my International binder, but not all. Hence, the page "trimming."
On a different topic, I'm curious why the staff saw fit to move this thread to a discussion forum for modern, post-1940, issues, when most of the discussion items to date are not focused on post-1940 issues of Mexico. Rather, much of the discussion is on classic Mexico and reference materials for same. ??? |

Hi, I have been researching a Mexico Album so that I can start to mount my stamps. I am trying to find a Mexico Scott Speciality Album 1840-1940. Do they exist? If so, how do I search and where is the best place to buy?
Thank you Nora.
Note: I have tried Google Searches, online Dealers etc. I can't seem to find a reasonable Mexico Stamp Album for early collection. I am not interested in Palo as those are very expensive. |
