"Cur alii, alii non". Why, other's do not.
I did take french in school. However, I did need to translate through google. My late brother David was a linguist. He studied languages at Georgetown University. He spoke six languages fluently. They said his french was native. In high school, he studied Russian on his summer vacation. He passed away twentyseven years ago. I do still have his early stamp collection.

Sorry. I probably should not have added that. It isn't French, it's Latin. It asks, "why some, not some/others?" |

I liked it,
If it wasn't for that, I would not have had an opportunity to mention my brother. I did feel bad when I said, I was an only child! |

Truly fascinating post. Please add pictures of the revenue stamps if you have them available to do so. Thanks for showing the covers. |

After posting the revenue stamps I noticed that the top one, the initials did not match the second two. Someone else maybe initialed for him?

I have quite a few initialed revenues in my stockbooks. I am going to look them over to see if I might have one or two similar. Your post/ "story" is great. These are the posts I enjoy reading the most. You have covered a lot of material and postal history here, thanks again. I think it would be really cool to find one of his revenues. You are welcome to them in the rare case I find one, Lol. |

Thanks rwoodennickel,
I did notice the first cover in the twelfth group was to Jessie Metcalf. I see Free and Edwin A. Bush Postmaster on it. Also Mill Brook on some covers . Is that Mill Brook NY. I see that Millbrook NY,was not founded until 1895? It is in Dutchess County. A different cover referred to it being in Warren County? It always appears as two words Mill Brook, where Millbrook NY is one. Just curious!

What source are you using that claims Millbrook, NY was established in 1895?
The PO listings on Jim Forte's website show: Mill Brook, Warren County, 1851-1864 Millbrook, Dutchess County, 1870-present |

Thanks for the clarification. I searched google Mill Brook NY. It combined the words. I am not the greatest at detective work.

I googled Jessie Metcalf early RI history.
@ Brown University! The 60 most $ $ families in the United States. Metcalf's were 27th. They donated the land next to Brown for the benefit of The Rhode Island School of Design.
I guess they were in the shadow of Brown University!
See you with five more tomorrow.

I'd like to see if we can identify the stamp on this cover you showed above: The cover is dated to February 3, 1879, which is a day before the merger that created the American Bank Note Co Consolidated. It bears back stamps for Feb 4, 1879 so it was in the mail stream on the big day. It is likely this stamp is on soft paper, and if so it would be a verifiable example of Continental Soft Paper. Could we have a good close look at the stamp? |
