I received this stamp as part of a lot of British Colonial stamps that I bought sometime ago. The glassine envelope containing it had a notation that it was an unissued assay from Russia Offices in Turkey. I cannot find it in my older Scott's Classic Specialized Catalog which is not surprising if it was never issued. However, I would like any info on the stamp that anyone may have. Also what were "Russian Offices in Turkey"? Did Russia postal offices in other countries. Thanks

Russia had post offices in a number of other countries including Turkey before World War 1. Many countries did likewise, in places where they had some sort of political or economic presence, to safeguard the passage of post back to the main country.

I did some googling out of interest and came across this - the main thrust seems to be that these are bogus stamps not actually used...

There are other web page which contain this stamp but they are all in Russia. But I do not risk clicking on links that go to RU web sites.

When mail moved by sea (surface), bags/boxes/crates of mail destined for any one country might move thru one/more ports.

In fact, it might sit dockside in any one port for days/weeks, waiting for a ship going in the right direction.

The technical term nowadays is 'transshipment'.

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_cen.../usmu010.asp ... and is what the UPU meant by 'closed mail' (methinks)

Cheers,
