Wert, that's called an "orb" cancel.

I believe that they were limited to larger cities in Ontario. Also Winnipeg, Man.

I have e reference somewhere with a list. If you want me to look it up, let me know.

The ORB canceller was used in London, Hamilton and Toronto. Toronto initially had a 2 ring ORB beginning in 1892. The 3 mentioned cities began using the 3 ring device in 1893 and continued until 1897.

Thanks area66 and Robert. Had I looked in the Proof Book before I responded I would have known that the Orb canceller was used in Winnipeg and Ottawa as well as the three I mentioned. t is now time to update that section of my collection of postal markings.

Hi GJP,

You should also update the dates of these 3-ring ORBS, as your dates of 1893-97 does not cover the ones shown for Ottawa (1908) and Winnipeg (1925).

Here is an example of a Hamilton, Ontario 3-ring ORB.

Hi GJP,

The following are two (2) Scott 35 1 cent small queens that have Toronto postmarks in July 1891 (4th and 31st), that pre-date your earlier statement that the 3-ring ORB in Toronto was not in use until 1893.
