Retouches In 1c Green Admirals

Hi there,

I recently picked up a small lot of 1c green Admirals and I've been trying to type them according to Marler's book on the subject. One of the things I'm struggling with is identifying lines that have been retouched versus the normal appearance of the lines. Does anyone have any tips on identifying retouches? Can anyone post an image of a retouched line on a 1c green Admiral?

Thanks for that link. It had one example of a retouched line on a 3c brown that was useful. What do people think of the left vertical line on the numeral box on this stamp?



It seems exceptionally heavy, but the whole stamp also seems to have been overinked...



Here's a pic of the numeral box of a different copy that has a common break at the bottom of the same vertical line, indicating to me that it wasn't retouched:

I agree, I think it is a retouch.
