I finally found some time to update part of the Vermont Philatelic Society Website. The 2015 list of Vermont pictorial cancels has been updated and includes one which was not reported in the Postal Bulletin. It also comes in two varieties: large and small.

Also updated the long Plymouth Holiday Series which began in 1998.

Glenn, thanks for posting I will check it out. Do you happen to know if records exist on registry mailings out of Vermont towns? I need to go back to 1893-1894 out of Rutland.

Any leads are appreciated.

By the way, I once called Rutland post office inquiring and they were not much help.

Crouse27:

What sort of registry records are you interested in locating?

If you are interested in the volume of registered mail at a post office, keep in mind that each post office would number their letters sequentially beginning with No. 1 at the beginning of each quarter (Jan 1, Apr 1, July 1, Oct 1), so if you have a registered letter dated on Mar 30th, with registration number 120, then you can estimate the annual volume of registered mail is probably on the order of 480-500. If you have several letters for the year, you might refine that number a little.

Several things will skew this data. One thing is that the Postmaster had to make regular mailings of cash to his administrative office, and these were done using registered mail, so not all of the letters were commercial/personal in nature. Another is that when a town has multiple stations/branches, each will have a unique sequence of numbers (but will not duplicate that of the main office or each other).
The only records that might exist would be preserved copies of the Window Registration Books, USPOD Form 1549, which have occasionally survived intact. I have several but none for Connecticut. The National Postal Museum/Smithsonian, might have a few copies preserved, but it would be a coincidence to have one for a town you might be interested in studying.

I have examined Window Registration Books in which 80% of the entries were for the Postmaster sending deposits.

If you are looking for something else, post your question in more detail or contact me off-board.

Mike

Crouse27: The only registry books that I have seen are a few that some antique dealers have for sale. 1893 is almost 125 years ago. I wouldn't expect many post offices to have any such material left. As a matter of fact, I believe that I have read in Postal Bulletins in the 1930s where postmasters were authorized (encouraged) to dispose of old records that were no longer of any use to save space.

By the way, I am editor of the Vermont Philatelist. If anyone reading this post would like an email pdf of the November 2015 issue, just contact me me and I'll send one to you.

I have further updated the web pages of the Vermont Stamp Clubs on the Vermont Philatelic Society's website. It occurred to me that perhaps some one may be visiting the University of Vermont in Burlington (Chittenden County Stamp Club), Dartmouth College (Upper Valley Stamp Club) or Bennington College (Green Mountain Stamp Society). Information about each club's programs, location and meeting times are listed.
