Shown are some more covers (no letters) that are in my possession and I would like to know their value and please educate me on the parts/terminology of a cover, stamp, cancellation, etc. I thought the one with a post mark of Hickory Tavern was interesting.
The Wilmington, NC. has a partial duplex postmark. Cover from Hickory Tavern, NC has a CDS postmark (Circular Date Stamp)with a ringed target cancel. Others have CDS postmarks with/without a cut cork cancel.
Hickory Tavern cover might be interesting as it was only a post office for about 16 years. The other towns are fairly common or not very readable. Also investigations of the receivers might be fruitful, but otherwise the condition of most of these covers are pretty poor - stains, tears, damaged stamps and the like would cause most dealers to place these covers into their dollar box at a stamp show.
These covers that would make for a nice start for a person just starting out in collecting US covers from the 1800s. Doing the research on them would be fun for such a person. As was mentioned the commercial value is minimal mainly because of their condition. Covers and stamps as well are like anything else where condition is very important and poor condition can remove most or almost all of a commericial value especially when the condition issue is in both the envelope and the postage stamp, and even the postmark if it is not clear and easily readable. Battlestamps is correct that most dealers would put these into their box of items for sale at $1 each or 6 for $5 and that is mostly to cover their cost of carrying the box around, handling the sale, and attracting people to come and look at their nicer quality and higher cost items.
