seems to be that this should not be that difficult but given that the previous owner couldn't ID them either leads me to this forum

1. pattern stamp, apparently 1942 ,one for Mauritania and one for guadaloupe-- in blue --appears to be airmail semipostal Quizane Imperiale 1942--a man standing over a map with a boat in the horizon. 1f20+ 1fr 80. I've looked in France, French colonies, and the individual countries---nothing.

2. again a paatern stamp for French colonies during WWII---Marshal Patain in right upper quadrant. 1F Afrique Occident Francais surcharged 2F 50 Ouvres colonialses in black on a light green stamp for Mauritania and the same stamp in blue with new values in red 50c +1F 50 on a 2f50 stamp.

3. Mauritania stamp Centenaire de Rene Gallie in pale orange 15fr new value on 90 cent stamp showing portrait on map of AOF

4. 3 stamps Mauritania Pour la protection de l'enfance indiginie semipostals
3F+9F in Red showing infants being bathed
2Fr + 6FR---in brown--people gathered outside a building
1fr 50+ 3fr 50 in green---looks like image of maternity hospital

I apologize in advance for these long winded descriptions but actually am an old dog and don't known how to upload images. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I am actually a little embarrassed to have to ask.

Have you tried http://stampworld.com ? They give a picture of every stamp, and that is easier to go by than a description!

1 - 1942, issued for range of French Colonies, but not ordinarily found legitimately used because the Vichy government's writ didn't run far outside France. Nominal value.

2 - 1944' as above, earlier Petain issue surcharged.

3 - Yvert 137, issued 1944.

4 - as 1 and 2, issued 1942.

The Petain period colonial issues are all listed in detail in French catalogues, but not necessarily in British or US ones.
