The BBC TV series "Doctor Who" is the longest running science-fiction show, having debuted in 1963. Growing up in Detroit, I was lucky enough to discover the show in 1976 when Canadian TV began broadcasting the new episodes starring Tom Baker as "The Doctor." I soon discovered that re-runs of the older Jon Pertwee episodes were being broadcast on PBS! Not quite Godzilla, but several episodes each week was better than the semi-annual "Monster Week" on channel 7's "4 o'Clock Movie!"
And so... From Royal Mail's 2013 celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who:
The eleven actors to have portrayed the Doctor: The booklet with the TARDIS, the first Doctor, William Hartnell and the eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith: The mini-sheet featuring four popular foes from the current series, re-launched in 2005, with the TARDIS at center:

Of course, Royal Mail issued First Day Covers as a part of their celebration!
The basic stamp issues from the previous post: The mini-sheet available only from the Prestige Booklet: Apologies for redacting my address, but my "better half" insisted! |

Interestingly, the Doctor's arch-nemesis appeared on a stamp before him. In 1999, as a part of Royal Mail's "Millennium" series, a Dalek was pictured on a 1st-class stamp. |

In 1990-91, Royal Mail issued a series of stamps featuring "big smiles" and a sheet was available where one could print a photo of their choosing on a non-postal tab. Issues of this sort have become both bane and boon for topical collectors ever since!
Here is a "Smiler" from 1991, featuring Tom Baker and his famous smile. The Fourth Doctor remains the longest-running actor in the role (1974-81), and is arguably the most popular as well. |

The show and cast members are incredibly popular at pop-culture events in the UK -- think "Star Trek" here in the states.

In my opinion, the best topical collections include items which require a sharp eye and knowledge of the subject by the collector, or items which make the viewer think. Popularity aside, a TV show is just a TV show - not much "thinking" material for a philatelist.
BUT! Here is an FDC from the US Celebrate the Century series, featuring the Integrated Circuit stamp of 1999. I flipped past it at a show some time back, but then... Whoa, whoa, whoa... YAHOO!
Front and center on the cachet is K-9, a very popular "character" on Doctor Who from 1977-81 and 2006 who also appeared in three spin-off programs in 1981, 2007 and 2009. |
