Hello,

I am relatively new to stamp collecting, but am loving every minute of it. Have been looking at other New York Pre-Cancels on this stamp, and all the other ones that I've found so far have three lines of text:

(ie) New
York
N.Y.

To make things more interesting, it's actually on a David Harum post card with a message and signature from him to the recipient. Can anyone help identify/advise history and/or value of this type of pre-cancel?

Most kindly,

Jay

Hi Jay, and welcome to this forum. One of the best sites to find out about precancels is http://precancels.com .
I am sure you can find this one on there!

Peter

Although this shows different denomination stamps of the series, the detail on the precancel varieties might be helpful:

Many thanks to you both!

Really appreciate the help...I am a younger collector, and do not know anyone that is a collector, so it makes it difficult to get help/advise from other people. This website is an amazing tool!

Can anyone suggest the best Scott book for collecting? Most interested in US Stamps.

Thanks again

New York has 47 [!] different listed precancel types. This one is called PSS-255. Collectable but very common, no special value.

Jsmit836,

Most folks choose the Scott US Specialized Catalogue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_catalogue ... introduction

http://www.linns.com/news/us-stamps...special.html ... Linn's ... Which Scott catalog is right for you?

http://www.ihobb.com/c/SCOTT_STAMP_CATALOGS.html ... a source for the print catalogues

http://www.scottonline.com/2016-sco...nited-states ... now available as a PDF!

Cheers,

This is called a PSS "L-5 E Var 4" in the new PSS Classics Catalog, with a value of 0.10 USD. "L-5" means it is the 5th [of 28] recognized L-type from NYC. L-type means the device was designed and fabricated locally in NYC. "E" means it is a metal electroplate device. "Var 4" means it is the 4th of 4 similar looking impressions that occur on the same printing plate. A lot of precancel trivia for ten cents.
