Sorting through my Russian Empire definitives and ran across a couple of blue crayon "cancellations". I have seen these before to mark remainders (e.g. Far Eastern Republic), but never on a stamp which (at least in appearance) has already been used.

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks
Michael

It's probably the blue crayon cross markings placed on early registered covers.

Michael,

in my experience these crayon marks on Russian Arms stamps are found on stamps originating from postal forms (Money Transfer or Parcel Receipt forms). The idea was to supposedly prevent fraudulent re-use of the (often high face-value) stamps, before placing these forms in the archives.
