Here is the earliest cancel (SIS-4100 type) from a town in Northern California called "Yreka". It is on a sound U17 entire. Nice addition to my CA town & type cancel collection.

Terrific item. At the time, the 10c transcontinental rate was costly. Is there an arrival back stamp on the reverse? It's always interesting to see the transit time from rural Western destinations.

I like the red cancel on the green indicia. It is a nice clear cancel which makes it extra nice. Congrats on finding it.

Currently the earliest documented use for that stamped envelope as well. Many of the used U17 & U18 that I have seen came from Yreka. Must have been a profitable gold strike at that time.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
In March 1851, Abraham Thompson, a mule train packer, discovered gold near Rocky Gulch while traveling along the Siskiyou Trail from southern Oregon. By April 1851, 2,000 miners had arrived in "Thompson's Dry Diggings" to test their luck, and by June 1851, a gold rush "boomtown" of tents, shanties, and a few rough cabins had sprung up.

The cover is dated October 1851. Continuing:

Quote:
Poet Joaquin Miller described Yreka during 1853–1854 as a bustling place with "... a tide of people up and down and across other streets, as strong as if a city on the East Coast".

Nice cover. Thanks for sharing.

Is there an online reference for earliest known usages for town postmarks?

I am not aware of an online resource for town postmarks, but there may be. Check state oriented postal history groups for a start.

The United Postal Stationery Society maintains an online resource for earliest reported and earliest documented uses of US postal stationery envelopes and wrappers. Unfortunately there is no provision to search by town/state.
