I would guess this person didn't want his business known.. could have thrown these away but I guess he wanted to keep as receipts. what do you think?

Far from me to know, but perhaps there is a remote possibility they are 'officially' redacted.

Maybe they wanted to test the post office guys in Maine to see if just the state was enough to be delivered to the right person? :) :)

Or more likely, the person who sold the cover did not want their name and address, or their family member's name and address going out in public somewhere. There are some people who get very touchy about having their "personal business" in the form of their mail being in the hands of strangers and so they do things to their names a addresses before letting such mail go. It is a little like the magazines you see in some dentist's offices and the like where the mailing address labels have been snipped off before putting them out in the waiting room.

The blackout on the covers are stripes of paper glued on & seem to have been done around the time .. I don't see why they would sell these as they have no value & are dirty.. Maybe the person was famous?? Why didn't they just destroy them ? I once bought a postcard collection ( 150 - 200 cards ) from the same family who blacked out the name on every card. This could have been the case with these as well. Probably part of a family lot ...
