Hello to everyone !
Nice to have joined the group - I've learned a lot in the last few days here - the info you supply is very helpful ! Thank You !
I'm new to collecting, but need some help with this stamp,
The second letter "N" in Bechuanaland is broken
Can you tell me if this would be an error ?
I know the condition of the stamp isn't great - so I don't know if it's just taking up space or if its worth keeping !
(I may have opened a can of worms there - I hope not)
Which brings up another question - At what point do you consider a stamp worthy of the bin ? Torn, missing perfs etc
Anyway, here's a pic of the stamp, any thoughts would be very gratefully received
Thank you !

Hi Sleekit, and welcome to this forum. That is not a bad stamp to have, I would say. It is not centered very well, but still it would be nice in an album. As far as the second N goes, I have no idea if it is a variety or just a freak or an oddity. It all depends on whether this is a recurring fault or not. Hopefully a specialist in this area will ring in. It is certainly a variety that is worth keeping!

Peter

Hello Sleekit, and welcome! Good to see another from our side of the pond! Have checked out my Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue, and there is no overprint variety mentioned. It catalogued at £4 in 2008. Still very much a 'keeper', as far as I can see, not a bad stamp at all. Even if I already had a copy I would keep this as well, for the overprint anomaly. I am not a fan of binning stamps, in fact I tend to keep just about anything to fill a space until I find a better copy to replace it with.
Hope this helps
DavidR

I think it`s a fine stamp. My (pretty old) Scott catalogue puts its value at $2.50 and says nothing about the broken `N.` (The catalogue does comment on an earlier overprint missing a dot over an `i,` so I suspect that the broken `N` is an oddity that adds nothing to the stamp`s value.)

Most likely it is a piece of dirt stuck when the overprint was applied . You would need to see if it is a constant flaw before any value can be put on it .My guess is it is just a one time flaw .

Floortrader's right that it's not a constant error. It's certainly of interest and I personally would keep it if I had it. I wouldn't say that it adds value to the stamp yet, but if you come across a few more of this issue (or indeed any others of the Jubilee set overprints) with other broken letters then it starts to get the interest of specialists.
