I have been working with Britsh American stamps over the last few months but am far from knowledgeable. There is a seller out of Canada who has been offering individual, used stamps but I am concerned about the cancels.
Below is an compilation I put together of the stamps listed individually. Are these known cancels for this period? What are the chances that a person could find this many time/date cancels, struck in almost the same way, on stamps of this period? If legitimate, would they not be worth more as a group than selling them individually.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Don

Sorry for the double post, just found another one.
Here is group (from same seller), issued about 10-12 years earlier with nearly identical cancels. Note how the 1D and 2D cancels are struck at the same angle. Am I being overly cautious or is this too strange to be true?

All of the clerks who applied those cancels were wonderfully even-handed ...

Don: you may want to visit the web site of the British West Indies Study Circle, an APS affiliate. http://bwisc.org . Maybe someone there can comment if the cancels are genuine. There is a North American representative, from Georgia, on their list and on the APS web site. They look OK, but I'm not an expert. I will note that the bottom two stamps in your first picture; the 6d and 2d; were cancelled in the US Virgin Islands.

You might also want to review John Barefoot's web site: http://jbarefoot.co.uk . He's published a number of references, including one that I own for forged stamps & cancels of Portuguese colonies. I did not see anything specific about BVI on his site, but a contact may still be useful for you.

Can't comment on value and how to sell, if that is your interest.

This is a list from Robert Cragg's web page

Anegada 1939 18n43 64w19
East End Tortola 1905 18n26 64w33
Road Town Tortola 1908 18n25 64w37
Tortola 1892 A91 A13
Virgin Gorda 1902 18n26 64w26
West End Tortola 1905 18n23 64w19

The dates of opening should be of great help to you,

Charlotte Amelie does not exist on BVI.

To me the 1st. West End looks OK

pagoda: is it possible that because the BVI and USVI are so close together, that those stamps could have been legitimately cancelled in Charlotte Amelie? As a different example, I have several Macau stamps that were cancelled in Hong Kong and Canton. Also Hong Kong stamps with cancels from nearby Chinese cities.

Steve,

no, it might be an arrival cancel but the appearance looks fishy,

The Charlotte Amalie cancels may be soaked from paquebot covers, which can legitimately show cancels which do not match the country of the stamp.

Paquebot was exactly my thought as well.

Any mail coming from BVI heading for the United States mainland most likely would be handed off to the U.S. Post Office in the American Virgin Islands .If something wasn't canceled then a postal clerk would just hit it with his stamper .That would be a likely turn of events .

Seeing that this seller is notorious for selling forged cancels, it is a 99.99999% chance that it is another of his productions,

I know someone who bought a rare cancel from this seller and he told me that the cancel is not permanent, it rubs off just by using a little pressure, most probably applied by a laser printer,
