Hi guys..i was looking through a lot of my old precancel stamps and came across this (not in good shape) Scott 104-xx...I have a couple of questions.

1 - Is this stamp below, what is called a ""shilling mark"...?
2 - Why is the whole line under Scott 104-xii blank in Unitrade...?

Robert

Robert, what do you mean by 'shilling mark'? The only shilling mark I know used to be in the old English monetary system. If you'd write the price of something as 5/11 ( 5 shilling 11 pence ) the '/' was the shilling mark.

True Peter...Unitrade uses it as and identifying mark.

It's called a "shilling mark" because it looks like 1' (i.e., like an apostrophe after the 1). I think whoever coined the name was simply looking for a catchy name. The actual shilling mark is much longer and at a slight diagonal, tapering at the bottom end -- so calling the plate flaw a "shilling mark" is sort of a stretch. Peter typing it as a / is more accurate. The actual plate flaw is a lot more like the small apostrophe.

I don't think the stamp you showed is the "shilling mark". The position is off, and it should be much more pronounced. But I will leave it to the Canada specialist to give you a more accurate opinion.

There is a variety of the 1935 Silver Jubilee 13c Yacht Britannia known as the "shilling mark" (Unitrade 213i) where the symbol appears above the 1 and 3 in the lower left denomination tablet. I've never heard the term applied to an Admiral.

In the 2016 Unitrade Canada, they use the term "Shilling mark" for the plate flaw on this stamp, assign a catalog number 104xii, and also include a picture of the plate flaw.

But as Robert pointed out, the prices are all left completely empty. Not even a ___.

OK, I understand the 'shilling mark' now. Robert, both of the numeral boxes have a dot in them. Is that normal?

Very nice stamp, Gilles! Now that far more closely resembles a shilling mark in the left tablet.

I'll try to post a picture of the Admiral shilling mark.

Gilles...Why do you think the left numeral DOT is significant..???

The Blue/red arrow also shows a possible attached dot on the numeral "1"
