Egg cartons and ice cube trays work well for sorting off-paper stamps.

IIRC, it was the box of half dollars from the bank, I "mined" for silver and discarded the paper wrappers, then used the box as a convenient storage for #5 glassine envelopes. The box costs nothing because the Federal Reserve Bank sends out the coins that way. However, it depends because some banks use different boxes. Since the boxes get filled with half dollars, they are rugged.

I sort by country. And the sub-sorting is done by imprinted value of the stamp.
